This project was more of an experiment than anything else. Instead of following my usual workflow of sculpting a high poly model and then retopologizing it, I wanted to see how far I could push a character by starting directly with the low poly model. Once the modeling was finished, I hand painted the textures based on the beautiful concept by Lin Chill.
Lately, I've been spending more time studying 2D art, and I wanted to bring some of that mindset into my 3D work. Painting this character felt almost like drawing directly onto the model, building up forms and creating depth through color and value where, at first, I only saw flat surfaces. It was a very different workflow from what I'm used to, but also an incredibly enjoyable one.
Working this way also made me realize that I sometimes rely too much on a detailed sculpt. For this kind of stylized project, painting was able to do much more than I expected, and it pushed me to think more like an illustrator. That shift in mindset ended up being the most valuable part of the experiment.
There are still a few areas, like the hair, that I intentionally kept relatively simple instead of refining further. Even so, I'm really happy with how the experiment turned out, and it encouraged me to keep exploring new workflows. Every project teaches me something different, and discovering new ways of approaching the same goal is one of the things I enjoy most about creating art.
